SEMICON Singapore 2008  - May 5 - 7, 2008

SEC/N and SEMI co-hosted a seminar at SEMICON Singapore on Tuesday, May 5th. The title of the seminar was “Used Equipment – The Evolving Secondary Market.” The seminar was reported as being of interest and well received by those in attendance.

SEMICON Singapore 2008 was again an exhibition focused on assembly and test. Over 300 companies exhibited at this year’s Show and the attendance was estimated to be approximately the same as in 2007. Given that the majority of secondhand equipment transactions are associated with wafer fab equipment, exhibiting at the Show currently has little to offer SEC/N members. However, given the forecasted expansion in SE Asia wafer processing activity over the next few years, the future of the secondhand equipment market shows increased potential across the board.

SEMI reports that while it is estimated that capital spending will decline by 10% to 15% globally in 2008, SE Asia equipment market segment is expected to gain by several percent. SE Asia companies expecting to grow during 2008 include: IM Flash, Tech Semiconductor, Chartered Semiconductor, UMC, ST Microelectronics, Infineon and SSMC.

SEMICON Singapore 2009 is scheduled for May 20th-22nd.

The seminar program included the following presentations:

  • Secondary Market Evolution: Growth & Maturity
    • Mr. Gary Alexander, Executive Director, SEC/N
  • Challenges of the Global Secondary Market
    • Mr. Stuart Proctor, Managing Director, Retronix Semiconductor
  • The Asia Secondary Market
    • Mr. Bruce Kim, CEO & President, SurplusGLOBAL
  • The Global Market for Backend Equipment
    • Ms. Angell Liu, Director of Asian Accounts, Team A.T.E.
