SEMICON Japan - December 6-8, 2006

Makuhari, Japan was again the location for SEMICON Japan 2006, the 30th Anniversary of SEMICON shows in Japan. The results are not official but based on the number of exhibitors and crowed aisles, this year’s show had to rank as one of the best SEMICON Japan shows ever. SEMICON Japan and SEMICON China are rapidly becoming SEMI’s most successful shows.

The SEC/N – SEMI cosponsored seminar was also very successful. The title of the seminar was “Best Practices and Business Strategies in the Secondary Equipment Industry. Virtually all of the 125 seats in the room were filled. Attendees were welcomed by Mr. Tagashi Kumagai (President of SEMI Japan) and Mr. Tim Hayden (President of SEC/N). Mr. Kumagai proudly commented that five years ago, SEMI Japan hosted the very first SEMI – SEC/N cosponsored seminar on used equipment. He also recognized the close relationship that exists between SEMI Japan and SEC/N. Mr. Hayden welcomed the attendees on behalf of SEC/N and reinforced Mr. Kumagai’s comments on the positive relationship that SEC/N and SEMI Japan continue to enjoy.

Gary Alexander, SEC/N’s Executive Director, began the program with a presentation on the evolution of the semiconductor industry’s secondary market. He concluded by stating that the three greatest challenges facing the secondary market today are: differences in the global market, respect for and the potential abuse of intellectual property rights, and increased interest and involvement by governments worldwide.

Mr. Samuel Ni, of SEMI China, overviewed the current situation and forecast of the semiconductor market in China. His presentation included comments on the evolutionary growth of the semiconductor market in China and the ever increasing effect of the secondary market.

Representing the OEM’s in Japan, were presentations by Mr. Takahiko Kishida of Nikon TEC Corporation and Mr. Shin Terasawa of Tokyo Electron Ltd. Both presentations emphasized the increasing important of the secondary market to the OEM’s.

Representing the Japanese refurbishers were presentations by Mr. Hiroshi Tabira of Noah Corporation and Mr. Masanori Seki of Ayer’s Rock Co., Ltd. They spoke of the challenges faced by the refurbishers primarily due to the evolution of the OEM’s involvement in the secondary market.

At the conclusion of the presentations, the presenters formed a panel and responded to questions posed by the Moderator, Mr. Shuji Kumazawa of GE GES, and from the audience. They were joined on the panel by Mr. Takashi Yokoyama of Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd. who represented JEITA and the end users of Japan. Topics included:

  • Why has the price of used equipment been increasing?
  • Is bidding (offering tenders) a good way to buy and sell used equipment?
  • How are OEM’s addressing the intellectual property issues of parts and software not supplied by OEM’s?

The panel discussion and seminar were concluded after giving each of the panelists the opportunity to offering their personal comments.
