SEC/N Conference and Golf Outing - January 23-25, 2006

Over 60 representatives from SEC/N Member Companies and invited guests participated in the SEC/N Conference and Golf Outing, January 23rd – 25th, 2006.

The Golf Outing (January 23rd) was held at the Raven Golf Club at South Mountain, followed by a Conference Kick-off Reception and Dinner. Hole Sponsors included SEC/N Member Companies Babcock & Brown, Catalyst Equipment, NxEdge Technologies, and TIP Electronics. Babcock & Brown also sponsored golf shirts for participants at both the Golf Outing and the Conference. Although there was not a Grand Prize winner of the $50,000 Hole-In-One Contest, Closest-To-The-Pin winners were Steve Birdsong, Bridgett Wright, Greg Wright, and Steve Grundon. The overall winning golf team included Ken Facklam, Steve Grundon, Sean Maher, and Colleen Ward.

The Conference was hosted by SEC/N Member ASML at their North American Training Center in Tempe, Arizona.

Tuesday (24th) morning’s agenda was primarily dedicated to the recognition of SEC/N’s members and programs. Mr. Walter Postma (Manager, Operations Special Applications) of ASML formally welcomed the Conference participants. Mr. Tim Hayden (SEC/N President) followed with a State of SEC/N Address. Membership Chairperson Chuck Svendson awarded a new member plaque to Iain Dewsnap of AG Semiconductor, as well as recognizing new members Ascent’tec and Asyst Technologies. The Virginia Economic Development Council was also recognized as SEC/N’s newest “Affiliate.”

SEC/N’s Japan Regional Council update was given by Mr. Shin Terasawa (TEL - Japan), after which Mr. Ron Melief (ASML) provided a Europe Regional Council update.

Bridgett Wright (SEC/N Secretary) followed with a presentation on the new SEC/N Newsletter and the SEC/N website (www.secn.org). Barrie Van Devender (SEC/N VP) provided the attendees with an update of the SEC/N Calendar and upcoming events for the coming “Year of the Dog.

SEC/N’s Programs and Standards were individually reviewed and formally adopted as part of SEC/N.S1.TC.01.B, Revision January 12, 2006. They include documentation on:
 - Buyer’s Checklist
 - Decontamination Guidelines & Declaration Form
 - Elements of a Standardized Contract
 - Equipment Condition Index
 - Intellectual Property
 - Terms and Definitions

Mr. Robert Barnes (Robert B. Barnes Associates, Inc.) closed out the Tuesday morning session with a presentation on “Developing Member Value with Special Interest Forums.”

The Tuesday afternoon session was entitled “What’s Happening Around the World?” and was appropriately led off with a presentation by Dianna Last (Last Concepts) “Building Bridges – Global Leadership.”

Mr. Dan Bjerk (International Trade Specialist) Phoenix Export Assistance Center, U.S. Department of Commerce and Mr. Gary Pacific (Chairman) of the Arizona District Export Council overviewed the operations and services that their organizations offer U.S. companies desiring to do business in other countries. Gary Alexander (SEC/N Executive Director) followed with an update of the U.S. Government’s “3R’s” and “Remanufacturing” initiatives. He also announced that the Arizona District Export Council and AMC International are sponsoring an inter-industry “A5R Conference,” February 26th – March 1st in Tempe, Arizona. “A5R” stands for Asset Recovery, Remanufacturing, Recycling, Reclamation and Remarketing.

Mr. Michael Lesiecki, Executive Director of the Maricopa Advanced Technology Education Center (MATEC), spoke on “Educational Initiatives That Support Our Industries.” MATEC is affiliated with many other technical institutions around the USA that encourage high school students to consider a career in electronics through industry supported programs.

SEMI and SEC/N continue to enjoy a very good relationship. Mr. Dan Martin, Executive VP of Global Expositions and Standards for SEMI, spoke on the evolution and future of SEMI’s programs and lead a discussion on possible ways that SEMI and SEC/N might increase their interface in the future.

SEC/N initiated seminars this past year on “Lowering Your Risk” in secondary market transactions. Mr. Barrie Van Devender (Axus Technology) presented an overview of the primary risks companies face and the respective value received from a SEC/N membership.

“How To Handle Used Equipment in the OEM Environment” was the topic of a presentation by Mr. Walter Postma and Mr. Ron Melief of ASML. They reviewed the ASML remanufacturing and refurbishment programs and gave the attendees a first hand perspective of the opportunities and challenges faced by OEM’s in the secondary market.

The afternoon session was wrapped up with a presentation by Mr. Bill George, Senior VP for Operations at ON Semiconductor. Mr. George provided an excellent overview of both the industry and ON Semiconductor’s operations around the world. He also emphasized the importance of end users being able to openly buy and sell surplus equipment through reputable dealers.

Conference attendees adjourned to the outside patio at Rustler’s Rooste for a western cookout. Generous helpings of both chicken and steak, country music, a bonfire and a terrific view of the Phoenix city lights were a great way to end the day.

Wednesday morning’s session was opened with a presentation by Ms. Carolyn Sechler (Carolyn Sechler CPA, P.C.) on SEC/N’s incorporation as a non-profit, 501(c)(6) association. Ms. Sechler is currently retained by SEC/N as a CPA for third party advice and counsel.

SEC/N’s Annual Meeting was convened at 8:50 AM by SEC/N’s President, Mr. Tim Hayden. Highlights of the meeting included the election of Mr. Jeffrey Hull (Foresight Processing) as a new SEC/N Board Member and the adoption of SEC/N’s Ethics SOP as proposed by Mr. Bill Scaife (Group 5) and Mr. Steve Grundon (TIP Electronics). SEC/N Members will be able to view the Annual Meeting Minutes under the “Members Only” section of the SEC/N website (www.secn.org). The Annual Meeting was adjourned at 9:55 AM.

The final presentation of the Conference was made by Mr. Morry Marshall, VP of Strategic Technologies at Semico Research). He provided a very well received overview of the semiconductor market’s current status and forecast, both for new and used equipment. Mr. Marshall then asked the Conference attendees to suggest ways that Semico might better serve the secondary market and more effectively interface with SEC/N.

Before concluding the Conference, the attendees participated in the following SEC/N related breakout sessions:
 - Future Direction and Affiliations
 - Future Programs and Events
 - Standard Terms and Definitions

Results of those breakout sessions will be reviewed and given consideration by SEC/N’s Board of Directors and Executive Director.

Lunch was served at Noon and the Conference was adjourned.

A Board of Director’s Meeting was convened at 1:00 PM. Minutes from that Meeting may be viewed under the “Members Only” section on the SEC/N website.
