SEC/N – SEMI Seminar

“Used Equipment – The Evolving Secondary Market”
SEC/N
and SEMI co-sponsored the first ever SEMICON West seminar on used
equipment this year at SEMICON West 2005. The seminar was attended by
over 400 people and was very well received. What’s more, it sent a very
significant message to the industry that the international secondary
market for surplus equipment and related services is real, growing in
both size and maturity, and is here to stay.
The seminar was introduced and attendees were welcomed by Victoria
Hatfield, President of SEMI North America. Gary Alexander, the Executive
Director of SEC/N, followed with an overview and was the Moderator for
the Seminar.
The Seminar consisted of a collection of perspectives on the
secondary market from representatives of the various segments of the
semiconductor industry. Copies of their Power Point presentations are
referenced and provided for your information. Any publication or
future use of these presentations without the expressed consent of the
presenters is strictly prohibited.
“State
of the Industry” – Gary Alexander is the owner and operator of
AMC International. His company is contracted by SEC/N for certain
management services, which includes Gary serving as SEC/N’s Executive
Director. Gary’s presentation provided and overview of the secondary
market including a history of its evolution, key players, and the “Top
Ten Challenges” facing the semiconductor used equipment market today.
“SEC/N®”
– Tim Hayden is the President of Rite Track, a refurbisher of track
systems for the semiconductor industry. He was also just reelected as
the President of SEC/N. Tim introduced SEC/N as the semiconductor and
electronics manufacturing equipment industry’s trade association for
used equipment and related services. His presentation covered the role
that SEC/N plays in the industry, the services it provides, and the
values for which it stands.
“A
Customer’s Perspective” – Bill Wilson is the Co-Chairperson for
the SEMATECH Surplus Equipment Council (SSEC) and manages contracts and
dispositions for the SEMATECH organization. He has been associated with
the SSEC since its inception and represented the consolidated
perspectives of the various SSEC participating companies.
“An OEM’s Perspective” –
Ron Melief is the Director for Remarketing Services for ASML in The
Netherlands. Ron is also heading up the establishment of SEC/N’s
Regional Council in Europe. ASML is a leading OEM in the semiconductor
industry and has a very successful used equipment refurbishing program.
His presentation highlights many of the reasons that OEM’s should take
an active role in the secondary market.
“A
Refurbisher’s Perspective (Front End)” – Richard Ringler is the
President of Broadway Engineering Services Team (BEST), BEST is an
internationally recognized refurbisher of Applied Materials equipment.
Rich was just reelected to a second term on SEC/N’s Board of Directors
where he served as the Treasurer for the past two years and is the
Program Chairperson for the coming year. His presentation focuses on the
critical steps that a quality refurbisher goes through in recycling
equipment for the secondary market.
“A
Refurbisher’s Perspective (Back End)” – Kyle Schroeder is the
President of Team ATE, a refurbisher of assembly and test equipment for
the semiconductor and PCB/SMT industries. He most recently served as
SEC/N’s 1st Vice President and is the Treasurer for the coming year. In
his presentation, Kyle provides an interesting perspective of both the
domestic and international issues faced by refurbishers in the secondary
market.
“A
Broker’s Perspective” – Bill Scaife is the President of Group 5
and a past Vice President and founding member company of SEC/N. His two
person brokerage operation has bought and sold used equipment
internationally for over ten years. Bill’s presentation traces the
evolution of the broker from the beginning to current day and provides
some interesting insights into the future of the brokerage business.
“A
Service Provider’s Perspective” – Chuck Svendsen is a leader in
Belfor USA’s business of incident containment and decontamination. He is
the Champion of SEC/N’s Decontamination Guidelines Task Force and is the
newly elected Board Member responsible for SEC/N’s Membership Program.
Representing all of the service providers that support the secondary
equipment market, Chuck’s presentation overviews some of the
opportunities and challenges that service providers face.

Lies Ahead?” – Gary Alexander wrapped up the Seminar with a
glimpse into the future of the secondary market both within and outside
of the semiconductor industry
