SEC/N Member Conference - January 23 - 25, 2005

Over 50 SEC/N members, speakers and invited guests recently participated in the SEC/N Member Conference in Las Vegas. Feedback from both surveys and informal comments indicate that the Conference was very successful and that everyone found it to be value added.

Copies of specific presentations are available to SEC/N members in the “Members Only” section of the SEC/N website. (www.secn.org)

The Conference opened at 5:00 PM on Sunday (January 23rd) with an orientation for new members conducted by Gary Alexander, SEC/N’s Founder and current Executive Director. The orientation was followed with a reception from 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM for all attendees and invited guests. Rite Track was the reception sponsor as well as being the Title Sponsor for the entire Conference.

Morning Session (January 24, 2005)

Babcock and Brown Electronics Management, LLC sponsored the Opening Session on Monday, which began at 8:30 AM following a continental breakfast at 8:00 AM. Tim Hayden, the President of SEC/N, introduced and presented plaques to the new SEC/N members. Tim then went on to talk about the “State of SEC/N,” priorities, accomplishments, the SEC/N Roadmap and explained SEC/N’s Rolling Calendar.

Gary Atkins, Chairperson of SEC/N’s Program Committee, reviewed the status of the SEC/N “tools” and “programs.” Three presentations on specific S1 Standards Tools” and programs followed Gary’s overview.
- Equipment Condition Index – Tim Hayden (Acting for Champion Al Davenport
- Decontamination Guidelines – Chuck Svendsen (Champion)
- Industry Metrics Program – Gary Alexander

The morning session ended with the opportunity for attendees to participate in break out sessions on the above three SEC/N tools and programs. A summary of those breakout sessions can also be found under the Members Only section of the SEC/N website.

Lunch was provided to all the attendees courtesy of sponsor Belfor USA.

Afternoon Session (January 24, 2005)

The afternoon session was sponsored by Group 5 and opened with all attendees introducing themselves and the companies that they represented. The remainder of the afternoon consisted of a series of presentations followed by the opportunity for the attendees to ask questions.

Intellectual Property – Sean Garrison (Lewis and Roca)
Steve Grundon is the Champion for SEC/N’s initiatives on intellectual property. Sean’s presentation began with an overview of the basic types of legal registrations such as patents, trademarks, service marks and copyrights. From this, Sean transitioned into a more focused discussion of secondary market IP situations, including possible global ramifications. Of specific interest to the attendees were software licenses and parts. Steve will continue to champion SEC/N’s IP initiative.

Intellectual Property (Parts) – Tom Stepien (Applied Materials)
Tom explained a recent announcement regarding changes in Applied Materials’ plans for selling spare parts. A discussion followed. Tom reiterated AMAT’s ongoing support for SEC/N and the forum that SEC/N provides for members to explain and openly discuss potentially controversial issues. For more specific information on the new policy, please contact Applied Materials directly.

Regional Councils – Kyle Schroeder (SEC/N 1st VP)
Kyle reviewed the recent accomplishments of the Japan Regional Council and highlighted some of the recommendations the JRC submitted for enhancing future regional council operations. Kyle also acknowledged that SEC/N was only one company short from being able to launch a regional council in Europe, which thanks to Ron Melief already has a champion.

China Update – Gary Alexander
Gary overviewed recent secondary market activities in China involving other associations and government agencies. He reaffirmed that SEC/N and SEMI will be co-sponsoring a seminar on the secondary market at SEMICON China and reported that SEC/N members Team ATE, Rite Track, Tokyo Electron, Axus Technology and Fab Logistics will all be presenting at that seminar, along with himself. Gary went on to highlight what he felt the future held for doing business in China, as well as newly developing secondary markets in other countries.

G8 #R’s Initiative – Sarah Aker (U.S. Department of Commerce)
Sarah flew from Washington D.C at the last minute to cover the presentation that Joe Bogosian had been scheduled to make. She outlined the history involved with the current multi-country efforts to address recovery, recycle and reuse of assets and resources. Sarah also recognized SEC/N for its initiative and ongoing efforts in many of the areas the 3R’s Initiative is attempting to address and suggested the possibility of future opportunities for interface with SEC/N.

SEMATECH Surplus Equipment Council (SSEC) – Bill Wilson (SEMATECH)
Bill overviewed the structure of SEMATECH, including a new logo and return to the old name. Bill went on to talk about the challenges and frustrations of the secondary market that continue to impact the SEMATECH members. He expressed both concern and hope for device manufacturers being able to take a more proactive role in the future and encouraged the SEC/N and SSEC to find new ways to work together.

SEC/N Ethics Policy – Bill Scaife
Bill had been previously asked to champion an effort that looks into ways that SEC/N might better define its position, policies and procedures with regards to ethical performance. Bill presented three scenarios for review and consideration by the members and SEC/N’s Board of Directors. His presentation was followed by an open discussion on industry and company ethics that will help the Board to better carry out the desires of the SEC/N member companies.

The Conference was adjourned for the day following announcements by Tim Hayden of upcoming and future events.

Morning Session (January 25,2005)

Once again the session was led off at 8:00 AM with a continental breakfast. The morning session was sponsored by TIP Electronics.

The first item on the agenda was a presentation by JoAnne Nolan who is the acting Chairperson of the Communications Committee. JoAnne overviewed plans for upcoming trade shows, conferences and seminars. She also reviewed a list of the Committee’s accomplishments and opportunities pending since the last member Conference in July. Her presentation concluded with a brief review of the SEC/N website and encouragement for SEC/N members to keep their information on the website updated and current.

Tom Moon is SEC/N’s Membership Chairperson and had prepared a presentation on the need and possible strategies for getting device manufacturers to once again take more of a role in the future of the secondary market. However, Tom was snowbound in Boston so Tim Hayden made the presentation and chaired the session for Tom. The discussion that followed highlighted some of the reasons device manufacturers have virtually withdrawn their support and involvement plus suggestions of ways to help them understand the importance of taking a proactive role. Tom’s Committee will follow-up on the overture.

Market Forecast and Metrics – Joanne Itow (Semico Research)
Joanne provided the attendees with a very comprehensive overview of the recent history and future expectations of the semiconductor industry. She indicated her concern for a recession later this year, which doesn’t seem to be as near as severe as the previous one, but will never-the-less slowdown new equipment sales. Activity in the global secondary market continues to look sound but is hard to quantify due to the lack of metrics for measuring secondary market activity. Joanne had participated in SEC/N’s breakout sessions on metrics the previous day and continued to express Semico Research’s interest in working with SEC/N to help develop future metrics. SEC/N has endorsed the need and will encourage its members to participate if a reputable program can be developed through sources outside of SEC/N.

Tim Hayden chaired the final segment of the session with a continued discussion of the SEC/N Roadmap. Tim went on to emphasize the importance of value added programs and deliverables for SEC/N members. He announced plans for a “road show’ in the fall of 2005 entitled “Lowering Your Risk” and wrapped up his presentation with a focus on “Creating Value For Your SEC/N Membership.”

After some last minute announcements and final comments, the Conference was adjourned on time at 11:55 AM.

A meeting of SEC/N’s Board of Directors was held starting at 1:00 PM. Minutes of that meeting will also be available under the Member’s Only section of the SEC/N website.
